The West Holt boys golf team got the season started in earnest last week as they hosted a triangular with Boyd County and Stuart on Monday then traveled to Plainview for the Larry Knaak Invite on Saturday.
The Huskies were able to win the triangular. The Huskies shot a team score of 193. Stuart edged Boyd County, 207 to 208. Individually, Boyd County golfers, Derris Hansen and Timothy Atkinson shot the low rounds of the day, 45 and 46. Stuart’s Anthony Heiser and West Holt’s Mason Mitchell tied for third with 47’s. Shooting 48 were Schyler Mustin, Stuart and huskies, Weston Mathis and Bryce Steinkraus. The rest of the scores for the Huskies were: Luke Olson 50, Nolan Hoffman 52, Channing Ogden 53, Cole Poessnecker 55 and Logan Poessnecker 69.
The Larry Knaak Invite on Saturday was played in cool windy conditions. The Huskies placed 5th in the mostly Class C & D tournament. Mason Mitchell had the Huskies low score of 96 and placed in a tie for 22nd in the field of 77 golfers. Weston Mathis shot 98 to tie for 25th. Bryce Steinkraus was right behind him with a 99 and 29th place. Luke Olson tied for 31st with 101 and Nolan Hoffman shot 119 in his first varsity tournament to tie for 62nd. First place individually went to Gage Burns of Creighton with an 81. Schyler Mustin of Stuat shot 84 to tie for second.
We have some work to do to compete in our conference and district. Battle Creek will be in our district, so we gotta get 40 strokes better to compete there, and Neligh is in NVC which beat us by 22. This team really hasn’t scratched the surface of their potential, so we need to get to scratching.
